There are various types of windmills, such as mills producing flour, mills producing paper and sawing mills. These mills are producing materials to products to sell. The Molen van Sloten is a different kind of windmill, its function differs from the others. It is a polder windmill that transports water of a lower level to a higher level.
The Molen van Sloten is made from oak wood, has a thatched roof and has an octagonal stone base. The mill is located on the ring canal of the Haarlemmermeer polder and together with the ‘Akergemaal’ it regulates the water level of the western area of Amsterdam.
The mill is one of the few windmills in Holland which is opened daily for public. Inside there is a lot to see. The technique of the windmill is displayed and you can find some history of the former villages ‘Sloten’ and ‘Oud Osdorp’. Beside this there is also a presentation of Rembrandt in the attic, containing wax figures of Rembrandt and several of his characters.
