Plaza Mayor Madrid

Plaza Mayor Madrid is a central plaza in the city of Madrid, Spain. Translated in English as “Main Square”, Plaza Mayor Madrid was built during Philip III’s reign and has origins dating back to 1577 when he asked Juan de Herrera, a famous Classical architect to begin discussing the plans of construction. They remodeled the extremely busy and chaotic former Plaza del Arrabal and turned the square into something truly unique and extraordinary for all to enjoy.

It is located only a few Spanish blocks away from another very popular plaza called Puerta del Sol and is shaped in a very rectangular way that measures 129 m x 94 m. The entire square is surrounded by three-story residential buildings that make up a total of 237 balconies that were built to face the plaza. Can you imagine living in one of those?

With a total of 9 entranceways and filled with restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and businesses, Plaza Mayor serves as a major municipal and cultural gathering place for all who find themselves in beautiful Madrid. Spend the day walking around and gazing at the magnificent architecture and detail, eating at the many fantastic restaurants and cafes and simply taking in the sense of community and fun that goes in within this town square.
